How to setup Canon PIXMA iP1600 and iP1700 on Ubuntu or Kubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn

First, pardon me for my bad English.
A. Download the Driver
Download these files (libcnbj-2.6_0-1_i386.deb, bjfilter-2.6_1-1_i386.deb, and pstocanonbj_3.3-1_i386.deb) aka the ip1600 (or ip1700) driver from here. See this for the details.
B. Install the Driver
Double click the file to install the driver, by this order :
1. libcnbj-2.6_0-1_i386.deb
2. bjfilter-2.6_1-1_i386.deb
3. pstocanonbj_3.3-1_i386.deb
or, do these command in terminal from the directory you put the driver.
sudo dpkg -i libcnbj-2.6_0-1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i bjfilter-2.6_1-1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i pstocanonbj_3.3-1_i386.deb
C. Configure the Printer with CUPS
1. Open your browser n go to http://127.0.0.1:631 or http://localhost:631.
2. Connect printer to computer, turn it on, and click "Add Printer".
3. Fill the form (see the snapshot) and click "Continue".
4. Choose "Canon iP1700 USB #1 (Canon iP1700)" and click "Continue".
5. Choose "Canon iP2200 Ver.2.60 (en)" in "Model:" and click "Add Printer".
6. You'll be asked for User Name and Password. Type the User Name and Password when you install (K)Ubuntu and click "OK".
7. You'll see your Printer Option. Configure as you wish and then click "Printers".
8. You'll see Printers page. Click "Print Test Page" to see if your printer is working.
9. For iP1600, replace any "iP1700" in this page with "iP1600".
10. If everything is OK, say thanx to Takushi Miyoshi (t-miyoshi@mfour.med.kyoto-u.ac.jp) for making the drivers.

Thanks sooooo much for the solution to the iP1600. You saved me from reverting back to WinXP just to use a printer. :o]
Now if I can get my LiDE 600F scanner to work I won't have to use WinXP for other than games.

I wonder if iP1600 can print grayscale images with black ink only. I have so many grayscale images from my scanner.

Can you upload the driver for windows for canon pixma ip 1700 printer? I have installed the driver in my computer, but when i wanted to install it in my laptop, the installation cd is gone, so if you could upload the driver, it will be a great help. Thanks.

I set everything up, it appears to be correct, but when i print, nothing happens, but it considers the job completed. Any ideas?

At least, my printer working properly. I am using pixma ip1200, and wohaaa.... its done. I used manual installation like in your guide. And I Added manually file canonip2200.ppd from /usr/share/cups/model/ directory while setting in cups.

PAk, saya udah setting semua dan tes page OK. tapi ketika mau print dokumen dari open office, pdf viewer dll ga bisa. responnya diem aja. Padahal dilihat udah complete job. Gimana nih???

Tentang masalah di open office, hal yang sama juga saya alami. Bahkan di pdf viewer, dan yang lain-lain ga bisa juga.
Saya coba instal turboprint (software-nya bayar; sya coba trial-nya), hasilnya sama ga bisa. Malah ada informasi 'printer not connected or offline'. Padahal printer udah dicolokin ke usb portnya dan online.

Saya search, nyari-nyari... saya buka 'help'-nya open office, saya cari ttg printing. Disana ada info (direct print). Ternyata ada beberapa printer yag memang ga kompatibel ama open office. Trus saya ikuti beberapa instruksinya.
Saya buka 'file system', saya cari 'spadmin' pake fasilitas 'search' doblle click saya pilih 'run in terminal' nah di terminal ada bilang:
"javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment!"
spadmin-nya tetep terbuka. nyoba 'add printer' ga bisa. Saya penasaran dgn javaldx bla bla bla td. Saya lari ke synaptic package manager. Install sun java. dan Akhirnya di Open office bisa ngeprint. (tapi baru dicoba di Oo Writer). Di yang lain belum nyoba, di PDF viewer belum bisa

I've tried:
sudo apt-get install libcnbj-2.6 bjfilter-2.6 pstocanonbj
But no packages are found. Are those packages still available? I've added the repositories for Ubuntu to sources.list, but I've had no luck!
Unfortunately the pstocanonbj package contains depricated package names as dependencies. If interested I can send you a ugly fixed deb (I simply replaced the libcupsys2-gnutls10 dependency by libcups2 and changed the calls in postrm and postinst to cups instead of cupsys)
it doesn't work for me :(
probably this solution is not compliant with ubuntu 64 bit grrrr
